Success Stories: Case Studies

SafetySmart Online Case Study: Henry Technologies

Henry Technologies is a world-class fabricator of pressure vessels and heat exchangers that serves the oil, gas, petrochemical and industrial refrigeration markets. Located in Brantford, Ontario, Henry has a loyal and long-serving workforce of more than 100 employees who undergo a rigorous internal and external training program. The Ontario Ministry of Labor requires that employers such as Henry Technologies take every precaution reasonable to protect workers. Ross Hainer, HR and Safety Training Manager of Henry Technologies, wanted to exceed those requirements by offering weekly safety training to employees every Monday. At one point, Henry Technologies had 42 months without any lost time, and Ross wanted to see his company return to that safety record.

Henry Technologies engaged SafetySmart Online as part of its progressive safety training program. Ross wanted an easy-to-use program with 5- to 10-minute safety talks in multiple formats that was consistent, reliable, high quality. With more than 1200 Safety Talks, more than 800 available in PowerPoint and more than 400 available in audio, SafetySmart Online was the perfect solution. Depending on the topic, supervisors at Henry Technologies use the illustrated handouts or PowerPoints in SafetySmart Online for their weekly Safety Talks. In addition, Ross also uses the 1100 Fatality Reports in SafetySmart Online to drive home the importance of safety.

“We had an incident here a few weeks ago where an employee did not take the proper safeguards and could have suffered serious injuries,” stated Ross. “I went right to SafetySmart Online and pulled up a fatality report on that very topic to deliver to the staff.”

“Weekly use of SafetySmart Online shows the guys we’re concerned about their safety and shows the Ontario Ministry of Labor that we want to exceed the requirements,” stated Ross. “It also enables us to spend more time training our own trainers and spend less on consultants.”

SafetySmart Online Case Study: Saputo Edmonton

Saputo Edmonton is a food manufacturing facility employing approximately 375 workers across several departments. Primarily involved in the processing of dairy products and juice, the plant is one of 26 such facilities owned by the largest dairy processor in Canada.

In the past, Workers’ Compensation premiums were “through the roof.” From 2003 to 2005 the facility’s injury claims were 5.88% higher than the industry average.

The Edmonton facility applied for the WCB-sponsored Partners Injury Reduction (PIR) program which the Quality Systems Supervisor now oversees. The goal of the program is to help companies in Alberta reduce their injury claims and in turn have their WCB premiums reduced by as much as 20%.

Earning a Certificate of Recognition requires an external safety audit. Certifying Partners conduct them on behalf of WCB. After the first year, the company does internal audits – the Quality Systems Supervisor became certified to do audits at the Edmonton facility. It’s not until the fourth year that another external audit needs to be completed.

Saputo engaged SafetySmart Online as part of their solution. The more than 15,000 safety tools available were a great fit. This facility now consistently uses the Safety Talks! included in SafetySmart Online. The wide variety of Safety Talks! available means there is something for every department and every occasion.

SafetySmart Online helps in the employee interview portion of the audit process. Staff are always commenting on how much they appreciate Safety Talks! It helps them be more aware of the hazards around the plant. Saputo also uses them as topical handouts when an incident occurs – in the news or in the facility. And the Quality Systems Supervisor says it’s helped company morale.

Implementing the PIR program produces dramatic results

In 2006 Saputo’s injury claims were 23.65% lower than the industry average. The Alberta Workers Compensation Board returned more than $148,000 in premiums. Projections are higher for 2007. This program is also available in other provinces, notably BC and Ontario.
